Whack. What was that loud thud?
It sounded like someone had violently thrown a fistful of mud at my sliding glass window. The one I’d recently cleaned.
I was working at my computer. Paying bills, checking emails, and making calls. Distracted by the mundanities of the day.
I better check. What if it were a bird, I pondered.
With much trepidation I slid open the door and saw on the cold concrete what looked like a grey twig or tiny pile of leaves. On closer inspection I saw it was breathing. Breathing very hard.
I stooped down and picked up this tiny creature. A sweet tiny bird with his eyes closed. He was in shock. I cradled him and told him he’d be ok. His tiny feet were so cute balancing in my palm. I covered him with my other palm to offer heat and energy. He was smaller than a tennis ball, smaller than a golf ball. Fragile. A splash of yellow at his tail feathers. He tried to open his eyes; I could tell it was a struggle.
I knew he needed to be kept safe away from creatures that might eat him, and off the cold ground so no one stepped on him. I scurried to look for a small box and laid out tissues for softness.
I popped him inside and told him he’d be safe. Just rest. I put another napkin over him to keep him comfortable.
He was out of sorts not sure why he was in the box but too exhausted to fight.
That loud sound of the thud on the window was a stark contrast to his tiny size.
I put some water nearby and continued to check on him.
Soon he was chirping. His eyes were open. He was curious. Maybe his headache had subsided. Or the chirps of the other birds were encouraging him to fly. So, the next time I checked on him he launched out of the box into the sky flapping his little wings.
I hope he flew to his friends. I am glad I listened to the call to help him. He did not need too much. Just a pause and a friend.
I looked up the metaphysical meaning of such an encounter and according to wikihow it said:
Things You Should Know. A bird flying into your window can symbolize a new change in your life, like a new job or relationship. It may be a reminder to believe that good things are coming in your future. A bird crashing into your window can also be a reminder to listen to your gut and trust your intuition.
I take helping him as a good sign. He did leave me one of his tiny feathers.
